Foods To Avoid During Jaundice

Jaundice is the clinical presentation of the increased amount of bilirubin in our body. It can be any of the three types. Pre hepatic, which is due to increased destruction of RBC; hepatic, which is due to liver cell damage and post hepatic, which is due to obstruction to bile flow.  Hepatic and post hepatic jaundice are the most commonly seen type of jaundice. Here, the body loses its capacity to digest many types of foods and it will be difficult for the liver for proper metabolism.

If you have jaundice, you should select foods that are easily digestible. Avoiding salt, fat, oil and spice content in the food is very important. Remember not to consume raw foods or semi-cooked foods because these are difficult to digest. Do not opt for high protein diet as it is not easy for the liver to metabolize protein. Digestion of fats and fat soluble vitamins are difficult due to lack of bile. Bile is essential for the digestion of fat.A carbohydrate rich diet will be the best choice until your liver recovers from cell damages.

Consuming wrong food may give extra workload to your body to digest it. With proper selection of a jaundice diet, jaundice can be controlled and one can prevent its recurrence. Here, let us see some foods that should be avoided from your diet if you have jaundice.

Foods To Avoid During Jaundice

1.Salt:Avoiding salt is recommended for an easy recovery form jaundice. Consuming salt on a regular basis may increase the damage of liver cells. This will slow down the recovery from jaundice. Avoid salt rich foods like pickles.

2.Meat:Meat of all kinds should be strictly avoided during jaundice, until the patient recovers completely. Meat primarily contains saturated fats which are not recommended for the proper recovery of patients with jaundice.

3.Butter:Too much butter and clarified butter are not good to take during jaundice. Butter is a source of saturated fat which should be avoided during jaundice. Saturated fats should account only for 7 percent or less of your daily caloric intake.

6.Eggs:Eggs contain high amount of protein and fat, which will be difficult for digest. Since liver plays important role in protein metabolism, diet containing high protein such as eggs should be avoided. Egg is difficult to digest as well.

7.Beans: During jaundice, body loses its ability to excrete nitrogen from proteins. This is because of the inability of liver to work properly in metabolic processes. But you can consume lean proteins which will not give extra workload to your body.

8.Junk foods: Junk foods or fast foods should be completely out of your consideration while looking for foods that should be avoided during jaundice. These will contain high amount of fat, oil and many other adulterants which will give extra strain and workload for digestion.

9.Dairy products:Milk and milk products should be avoided during jaundice. Dairy products such as cheese, butter, margarine, cream and desserts should be avoided if you have jaundice.
