My article in oneindia.com: http://www.boldsky.com/beauty/skin-care/2013/side-effects-botox-032900.html
Botox is famous among non-surgical cosmetic treatments, which
contains botulinum toxin type A, human albumin and sodium chloride. It is commonly used for muscle spasm
control, severe underarm sweating and cosmetic improvement. Botox Cosmetic is
FDA approved for smoothing the lines between your eyebrows which are called glabellar lines. But
it is being used unofficially for horizontal forehead lines, crow's feet, lines
at the corners of the mouth and smoker's lines around the lips. Since this
injection is given to the site where treatment is needed, the presentation and
seriousness of side-effects will also depend on the site of injection. If you
experience any unusual consequence due to the injection, you should seek
medical advice as soon as possible. Here are some possible side-effects of the
Botox injection.
1.Allergic reactions: If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of
Botox injection, then the most expected side-effect would be allergic
reactions. This can be characterised by itching, wheezing, asthma, a rash, red
welts, dizziness and faintness. It is recommended to take medical advice as
soon as possible if you have breathing problems or dizzy feeling.
2.Urological Issues: Botox is used in the treatment of overactive
bladder, which cause uncontrollable urge to urinate frequently due to
involuntary contraction of bladder muscles. Botox injections may help to relax
these muscles, but may cause urinary tract infections (UTI).
3.Bruising and swelling: This is an immediate side-effect of Botox
injection, especially if you have a
sensitive skin. Mild to moderate pain can occur along with redness due to mild
injury to the soft skin tissue.
4.Flu-Like Symptoms: This is one of the most common side-effect of
this cosmetic injection. This usually occurs a week after taking Botox. It can
be presented as fever, headache, body aches, chills and running nose.
5.Sinus Infection: Some people get a sinus infection after Botox
injection. The sinuses may swell up and may cause recurring headaches. The neck
may also become tight along with the sinus infection.
6.Droopy eyelids: In certain cases Botox may spread a little beyond
the intended injection site and affect the surrounding tissues. If the
injection is taken on the forehead close to your eyebrows or your upper
eyelids, chances are more for you to get temporary droopy eyelids.
7.Bronchitis and Upper Respiratory Tract Infections: This may occur in patients treated for spasticity.
In patients with reduced lung function, Botox may cause breathing difficulties
and this treatment for upper limb
spasticity may result in upper respiratory tract infections.
It is very important to
find out an experienced and expertise person for your Botox treatment. This
will help you to know more about the need of a Botox injection and probably
about any alternatives.
