Causes Of Nausea After Childbirth

Nausea is very common during pregnancy. But there are certain women who may experience nausea even after childbirth, which is called postpartum nausea. Some women may feel it as the common morning sickness, while some others experience it along with other symptoms. Your body may take some time to get settled to the changing levels of hormones and its actions. This may result in nausea for some more time even after childbirth. Moreover changes during breast feeding will also contribute to the occurrence of nausea after childbirth.

It is normal to have mild nausea for almost eight weeks after childbirth, no matter you have undergone a vaginal delivery or a C- section. But, if you experience severe nausea, if it persists longer or if nausea is associated with some other symptoms; you have to seek medical attention. Here are some common reasons which may cause nausea even after childbirth.

Causes Of Nausea After Childbirth


1.  Oxytocin release: Nausea during breastfeeding is very common due to the release of the hormone Oxytocin during milk let-down reflex.  Usually this type of nausea will disappears after about eight weeks from the childbirth.

2. Dehydration: while breastfeeding, chances are more for the mother to get dehydrated. Drinking enough water while breastfeeding is very important to keep you hydrated.  Drink at least eight glasses of water daily, which is important for keeping you healthy and to prevent nausea.

3. Recovery after delivery: During pregnancy your body has undergone various physical and hormonal changes. In certain women, the body will take some more time to get into the track. Such women may experience nausea even after childbirth.

4. Baby’s growth sprout: During growth sprout baby will drink more breast milk. Because of this the hormone levels will increase and this may result in nausea even after childbirth. Taking proper diet and enough water is important to cope with nausea.

5. Antidepressant drugs: Nausea is a common condition in women who takes antidepressant drugs after childbirth. Antidepressant drugs are usually prescribed for women who have postnatal depression. Occurrence of nausea depends on the type and dose of the medicine.

6. Iron deficiency anaemia: Iron deficiency anaemia is another condition which may cause nausea even after childbirth. Blood loss during delivery and inadequate intake of iron through diet are the main cause of iron deficiency anaemia. Correcting the condition will resolve nausea.

7. Urinary tract infection: The immunity level will be low during pregnancy and a few weeks after childbirth. This will make the women more prone to urinary tract infections. If you experience nausea along with fever after childbirth, you have to seek medical advice.
